The leader of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, has appeared at a media conference where he expressed his support for the protest taking place in Tirana, calling on democrats and citizens to join him.
Berisha described the protest as a civic movement against the government and accused Prime Minister Edi Rama of trying to minimize its importance.
"I am here to express once again the strongest support of the Democratic Party for the magnificent protest of the youth and citizens of Tirana and all of Albania. A protest that has turned into a powerful hurricane against the authoritarian dictatorship, the regime of Edi Rama, based on the electoral farce, crime, drugs and theft of Albanians. Tirana has never known in its history a protest as powerful and massive as this one.
Therefore, my call, for every democrat, supporter of the DP, to join the protest of the youth and citizens of Tirana. This protest exceeds the powers of the political forces, but which resolutely demands the end of Edi Rama's autocratic regime. The annulment of a series of laws, for which the DP deputies in Parliament have voted against in committees and plenary sessions. They have opposed these unconstitutional laws, which contradict the EC directives. So, every democrat, but every citizen of Albania has the most important motives to support this protest, which has taken on, in addition to the dimensions of the hurricane in the streets and squares of Tirana, unprecedented global dimensions. It has become news and super news of all the largest agencies in the world," said Berisha.
The leading democrat also criticized the organization of activities by the Socialist Party at the same time as the protest, describing them as an attempt to undermine civic mobilization.
"But I am here today to denounce with the greatest force the irresponsible, cynical and hostile attitude of Edi Rama and his circle towards the protest, the demands of the protesters and I warn that with this attitude, he seeks to plunge the country into chaos. It is inexcusable, unacceptable, his attempt to diffuse the powerful hurricane with anachronistic anti-rallies, supposedly celebrating the 85th anniversary of the criminal party. It is cynical. It is humiliating and insulting for every Albanian to oppose the civic protest with a meeting of the criminal scum of the Socialist Party, meetings that resemble from Alpha to Omega to mafia meetings. Edi Rama must urgently give up the anti-rallies. He must not challenge the powerful peaceful hurricane of student youth with anti-mafia rallies," he said.
At the end of his statement, Berisha called on international opinion to support the protest and condemned, according to him, the provocations against the participants.
"Once again, I condemn with the greatest force, I call on international public opinion, political opinion to support this protest, which has defined as its mission the salvation of Albania from Edi Rama's narco-regime.
"I also condemn Edi Rama's base provocations against the protesters. His epithets, obsessions, hallucinations," Berisha said.
