The President of the Republic, Bajram Begaj, was received today at an official ceremony by the highest authorities of the Calabria region, where he is to fulfill his promise to meet the Arbëresh municipalities and honor the name of our National Hero, Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg, by placing his busts in the squares of the municipalities where they are missing.
But, for the President of the Republic, these meetings are not just about connecting Arbëresh communities with Albania (under his initiative, several Arbëresh communes are being twinned with Albanian municipalities).
President Begaj sees this visit as a deeper perspective, that of strengthening cooperation with Italian municipalities and regions and, also, to develop the economies of both countries.
The Head of State invited Italian leaders and investors to see Albania as an investment gateway for the entire Western Balkans.
Albania, said President Begaj, as many of you have touched and know, is a country oriented towards peace and harmony with its neighbors, for the prosperity of the entire region.
" We are grateful to Italy for the hospitality and long-standing integration of the Arbëresh and Albanians after the '90s, as well as for respecting and not assimilating them. We have strategic partnership relations with Italy. Italy is our partner with the largest trade exchanges and, above all, the greatest advocate for our integration into the EU ," he said.
In a statement to the Italian media, asked about the importance of the visit for the ties between Albania and Calabria, the Head of State said: " I would correct your question, that it is not an important tie between Calabria and Albania, but it is a very important tie between Italy and Albania."
The relationship between Italy and Albania is a relationship that is based on deep roots, on a strategic partnership. We are NATO member countries, we have a very good advocate in Albania's journey towards the EU, such as Italy, and we have a very good economic and trade cooperation. I cannot fail to mention the cooperation in the field of culture and in the field of education between the universities of the two countries .
