US Embassy dinner on the occasion of the 249th anniversary of Independence, zero attention to politics...
The US Embassy has dealt another blow to Albanian politics.
Since Donald Trump's victory, her reactions have been very few and measured, while there have been no meetings with political representatives at any point.
The first signs of cooling were given after the May 11 elections, where the embassy spoke in code, not congratulating Rama, but also ignoring the opposition's accusations. However, the big blow came today.
The US Embassy held a dinner on the occasion of the 249th anniversary of Independence. It has become a tradition now that a few days before July 4, the embassy holds a reception where it invites politicians, media representatives, religious communities, etc. This dinner was held today as well, but two elements were noticed.
In the speech given by Charge d'Affaires Nancy VanHorn, politics was completely avoided. In all previous cases, there was talk about relations between the two countries, there were messages about justice, politics, etc., but not this time. VanHorn focused on the independence of the US and military cooperation.
“ Our leaders are now returning home from the NATO Summit, where Allies pledged to invest 5 percent of their GDP each year on core defense requirements. We are counting on our allies to do their part to protect the values we all hold dear. Earlier this month, I had the honor of watching Albanian and American forces work together in Exercise DEFENDER-Europe ‘Immediate Response.’ I was deeply moved when I heard from one of our Albanian partners the story of an Albanian soldier killed in action while serving on the border with the United States nearly a decade ago. He left behind a little girl – now a young woman. I asked the gentleman who shared this story with me to tell him how deeply we appreciate her father’s sacrifice. This is just one example of the many sacrifices Albanians have made to protect our freedoms and build a more peaceful world. We are with "We are lucky to have allies like Albania ," she said.
Also, the Chief of Staff, Arben Kingji, delivered a keynote speech at this event, who was thanked by the diplomat and not by political representatives.
The second element is that fewer politicians were present at the ceremony than usual. The Speaker of the Parliament, Spiropali, several ministers and very few MPs were there. But the US embassy did not distribute any photos of their presence.
Every year, the embassy has distributed dozens of photos from the meetings, where all the guests could be seen. But today, the embassy has completely avoided politics. Even in the photo that the embassy has distributed, they have taken care to only show the diplomat and the chief of staff. All this, not without purpose:
Is this a signal that another era is coming? Or has the US gotten fed up with Albanian politics? We will have to wait and see when the new ambassador arrives. /Pamphlet
