The debates on the final report on the Administrative-Territorial Reform were accompanied by a strong clash in the Assembly between Socialist Party MP Pirro Vengu and Democratic Party MP Agron Gjekmarkaj.
During his speech, Vengu criticized the opposition's positions, addressing Gjekmarkaj in particular, who he said had requested in previous discussions that the religious element be included in the reform criteria.
" We saw some colleagues today who take hatred as a mission and move forward by continuing to lynch their colleagues. Mr. Gjekmarkaj taught us last time that in the criteria of the Territorial Reform we should also consider the religious criterion. I invite you to distance yourself from these promotions. You seek moral power, but when you end it with violence, you promote banal power ," declared Vengu.
Gjekmarkaj reacted immediately from the podium, categorically denying that he had incited religious division or hatred and asking Vengu to retract the statement.
The Democratic MP said he had spoken about the historical importance of Mirdita and Catholicism in Albanian history, emphasizing that he had not called for religious division.
In his response, Gjekmarkaj used harsh tones towards the socialist MP, calling him "intellectually shallow", while publicly demanding that he apologize for the accusations.
" I have never incited religious hatred. I said that Mirdita, the largest Albanian province, is divided into five districts and that Catholicism is a universal value. You are a liar and an abuser, apologize, shame on you, " Gjekmarkaj said.
The clash between the two MPs was one of the most tense moments of the parliamentary debate on territorial reform, in a session characterized by mutual accusations and ongoing tensions between the majority and the opposition.
