Today marks 148 years since the founding of the Albanian League of Prizren, one of the most important events in the history of the Albanian nation and the moment that marked the beginning of national political organization in defense of Albanian lands and identity.
On this occasion, the President of the Republic, Bajram Begaj, commemorated the anniversary through a post on social networks, where he appreciated the historical role of the League of Prizren in the process of national awareness and unity.
"148 years ago, the League of Prizren was held in Prizren. The League was the highest expression of our national consciousness, a temple of the Renaissance's efforts for the unification and independence of Albanians under a single state," Begaj writes on social media.
The Head of State emphasizes that the message and values of the League of Prizren remain relevant today, serving as a symbol of unity, national responsibility and commitment to the interests of Albanians wherever they live.
"The spirit of the League of Prizren remains a permanent call for unity, national responsibility and commitment to Albania and Albanians wherever they are. Their example, courage and wisdom remain a constant inspiration for our nation and will be forever honored by us," he concludes.
The date of June 10 holds a special place in national history. On June 10, 1878, the Prizren Assembly convened, which proclaimed the creation of the Albanian League of Prizren. The proceedings of the assembly were led by Iljaz Pashë Dibra, while the political program was drafted by prominent figures of the National Revival, among them Sami Frashëri, Abdyl Frashëri, Pashko Vasa, Jani Vreto and Zija Prishtina.
The League of Prizren is considered the first pan-Albanian political and military organization. The assembly was attended by delegates from the four Albanian vilayets of the time – Shkodra, Manastir, Janina and Kosovo, with the aim of protecting Albanian lands, advancing their administrative unification and affirming before European opinion the distinct national identity of Albanians, regardless of religious affiliation.
