An unusual incident occurred yesterday, July 17, 2025, when a Delta Connection aircraft, flight 3612, operated by SkyWest Airlines, traveling from Omaha, Nebraska, to Detroit, Michigan in the USA, was forced to make an emergency landing at Eastern Iowa Airport in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
The cause of the diversion was the erratic behavior of a passenger, identified as Mario Nikprelaj, 23, of Albanian origin, from Nebraska. According to CNN reports and official statements from the Cedar Rapids Police Department, at around 6:13 p.m., authorities were notified of a disturbance on board the plane. Nikprelaj is alleged to have initially gotten into an argument with a flight attendant before attempting to open an emergency exit door during the flight, an action that could have had serious consequences for the safety of all passengers and crew.
Cedar Rapids police reported that after the emergency landing, Nikprelaj was arrested and taken to the Linn County Correctional Center. He faces a number of charges, including disorderly conduct, assault, possession of prescription drugs and first-degree harassment. Authorities have said more charges could be added as the investigation continues.
According to witnesses on board, the situation became tense when the passenger began to behave aggressively, causing concern among other passengers and the crew. The attempt to open the emergency door, which is designed to be extremely difficult to open during flight due to cabin pressure, did not result in any immediate injuries, but forced the pilots to take immediate measures to ensure safety.
Flight 3612, originally scheduled to depart from Omaha and arrive in Detroit, eventually arrived at Detroit Metropolitan Airport about an hour and a half late, according to Flight Aware data. After making an emergency landing in Cedar Rapids, the plane was inspected and cleared to continue its journey after authorities addressed the situation.
Albanian Mario Nikprelaj, 23, remains in custody as his case is prepared for trial. His motivations for his actions on board have not yet been fully clarified, and investigations are ongoing to determine whether there were additional factors, such as substance use or mental health issues, that may have influenced the incident.
