An international cocaine trafficking network has been hit by Spanish authorities, seizing over 9 tons of drugs in the ports of Vigo and Valencia.

Criminal organizations used various methods to transport drugs including commercial fishing vessels and tugboats, but also containers of fruit and packages of frozen tuna.

According to official sources, in late 2024 authorities discovered 7,500 kilograms of cocaine hidden in tuna fillets that arrived through the port of Vigo and were seized in a warehouse in Cambre A Coruña. Another operation at the port of Valencia in November resulted in the seizure of 2,005 kilograms of cocaine divided into 2,000 packages and hidden in fruit boxes coming from Ecuador.

Investigations revealed that part of the shipments was managed by an Albanian citizen, who is now in prison. Last week, several people were arrested while coordinating another drug transport through the port of Valencia, putting an end to the criminal network that used both ports to smuggle drugs into Europe.

The seizure at the port of Vigo was carried out by the EDOA Anti-Organized Crime and Drug Team in collaboration with the National Police and the Customs Surveillance Service. The drugs were hidden in a sophisticated way within the container floor structure and not in classic ways such as blind hooks or refrigeration units, which made finding them more difficult.

Authorities announced that these seizures demonstrate the ability of traffickers to use various methods of concealment, but still failed to evade the authorities' scrutiny.
