The murder of 13-year-old Albanian Aurora Tila, a year ago by her friend, who pushed her off the balcony of the apartment where she lived with her mother, shocked not only Italy, but also Albania. After a year, the Juvenile Court in Bologna decided to sentence the perpetrator to 17 years in prison.
In an interview for Top Channel i, Aurora's mother, Morena Corbellini, tells how she experienced the court's decision.
She described Aurora as a closed and shy girl, sweet and full of light, who wanted to become a psychologist and travel the world.
"Aurora was a very reserved, shy, very sweet and bright girl, as much as her friends always remember her with a smile and a light in her eyes, she always tried to help everyone with any problem and did her best to bring smiles back to the people around her."
"She wanted to become a psychologist, she wanted to travel the world to get to know different peoples and cultures; she dreamed of having a family of her own and making a great career in the field of psychology. Forgive me if I don't remember more at this moment, but, unfortunately, my mind is always clouded by pain," she said.
Regarding the Court's decision, she stated that the perpetrator received the maximum sentence, but that it was not sufficient, since her daughter is no longer alive, adding that she had no romantic relationship with the perpetrator, but only acquaintances as friends.
"Let's clarify one thing: Aurora did not have a love affair, she was only 13 years old, so it was about something little more than a friendship. The fact that the journalists presented him as her "boyfriend", because that sounded more sensational, does not match either my words or reality. However, yes, I was aware of this sympathy. I welcomed the court's decision positively from a legal point of view, but as a mother I will never be able to be completely satisfied, because nothing will bring Aurora back to me. He is still alive, he can laugh, joke and think about a future after serving his sentence, my daughter has been reduced to ashes by his hand.
"I repeat, from a legal perspective and for the type of process, this is almost the maximum that could be given, but for me it is not fair, there is no sufficient punishment for whoever killed my daughter," she confesses.
Corbellini adds that he had long forbidden Aurora from dating the young man who took her life, as he knew he was a person who should not be associated with. He also says that he will create an association to help parents and young people, which he will call "Aurora's Light."
"If Aurora could hear me today, she would understand why I hated that guy so much. I didn't trust him, I didn't want him to meet him, I had even forbidden him. I don't know why, but my instinct told me that he wasn't a person to be around."
"I hope that no more parents have to go through what I am going through. Life without a child is no longer life, so I will create an association in her memory, to help young people and parents. It will be called "The Light of Aurora" (La Luce di Aurora)," she said.
