The Highway Code needs to be made much stricter!

This year, as the number of vehicles registered with Albanian license plates has reached 1 million (three times the number in 2010), the number of road deaths has halved.

In 1990, only 4 Albanian citizens lost their lives in road accidents for the simple reason that very few vehicles were circulating on the roads of Albania at that time...

With the general liberalization of the country, the number of vehicles circulating on Albania's roads increased exponentially, and consequently, so did road deaths. The peak of road deaths was marked in 2010, when a full 352 citizens lost their lives in road accidents!

We come to the present day.

This year, as the number of vehicles registered with Albanian license plates has reached 1 million (three times the number in 2010), the number of road deaths has halved. (Let's hope there aren't any major road accidents by the end of this year!)

However, this extraordinary improvement in the safety of life on the country's roads hides a problem that, if solved, would bring us equal to the EU average!

Half of the road deaths this year in Albania are among pedestrians, cyclists, scooter riders and motorcyclists. In the European Union, only 20% of road deaths are in this category of road users. If we had a similar percentage, we would have the EU level indicator of road deaths per million registered vehicles!

A short-term solution to this problem could be to tighten the Highway Code for all road users, including pedestrians, cyclists, scooter riders and motorcyclists, as well as the drivers who kill them...

A long-term solution (after tightening the Highway Code) would be for the Ministry of Interior to develop media advertising campaigns to raise awareness among the population that strict enforcement of the Highway Code saves not only your wallet, but also your life...
