The Competition Authority has launched an investigation, which is nearing completion, regarding the mobile telephony market in Albania, while for weeks, One Albania subscribers have been facing the situation of tariff increases.
They have been notified by the company through messages about the increase in service prices, starting from May 1, 2026. According to a standard message sent to subscribers, tariffs will increase by up to 2.2%, based on the consumer price index published by INSTAT.
Although One Albania does not promise any increase in service quality to justify the increase in tariffs, subscribers are facing a fait accompli, while it seems that the Competition Authority has entered the game.
Denar Biba, head of this Authority, on the show 'This Week' on News24, speaking about the situation on the mobile telephony market, stated that this market in Albania is not a monopoly, but has characteristics of a market with limited competition.
" There are thousands of markets in the world and most have competition. A market without competition is only a monopolistic one, but in Albania we do not have such markets. However, there are duopoly markets, such as the mobile telephony market, which, due to their structure, create problems ," he said.
Biba announced that the Competition Authority has launched an investigation into this market and that it is nearing completion, although he did not reveal details. According to him, concrete developments are expected in the coming weeks.
" The investigation is in its final stages and it is a matter of weeks before we come up with a decision. I can say that something good will happen in the mobile telephony market ," declared Biba. It seems that the decision of the Competition Authority will be in the protection of consumers, although the final position must be awaited, which will certainly be given before May 1, the deadline that One Albania has unilaterally set for the increase in tariffs.
