The price of gold on international markets has reached a new record. The precious metal traded on the stock exchange on Monday (22.12.2025) at a value of $4,420. This is not only due to the crisis and US customs policy.
It is the first record since the highest price so far recorded in October, when the rate reached just over $ 4,380 per ounce (31.1 grams): Gold today reached the price of $ 4,420. Thus, this precious metal just before the end of the year marks an annual plus of almost 70%. It is one of the strongest deposit classes of the year and the largest price increase since 1979.
This increase is considered to be mainly related to geopolitical and economic uncertainties as well as wars and customs. Many depositors in such times prefer so-called safe havens such as gold and silver.
"Gold has had great stability in purchasing power for centuries - regardless of political systems, or monetary and economic crises," explains York Tetzlaff, head of the association of the branch of the professional associations of precious metals, based in Pforzheim.
Central banks are the main buyers of gold
The increase in the gold price has also been influenced by the development of real interest rates and the weakening of the dollar. The demand of reserve banks is also related to the increase in their gold reserves during this year. According to the European Central Bank (ECB), national central banks in 2024 covered over 20 percent of global demand for gold.
Customs the decisive factor
Central bank demand for gold, according to experts, will remain constant and safe against the backdrop of geopolitical uncertainty and trade policies such as tariffs. The World Gold Council notes in an outlook report that if economic growth slows or there is a sharp decline, moderate or large gains are possible.
"On the contrary, if a policy success pursued by the administration of US President Donald Trump were to accelerate economic growth by reducing geopolitical risks, this would lead to an increase in interest rates and a strengthening of the dollar, which would affect the price of gold." /DW
