More money from immigrants, less impact on pockets/ The paradox of remittances:

The year 2025, at least for the January-September period, has been exceptional in terms of remittances, with total emigrant remittances at 816.45 million euros, according to data from the "Bank of Albania". This is the highest level since the start of advanced measurements, and more than any other year, if we talk about the same period.

But, beyond the nominal value, this increase in remittances comes in a special context, the depreciation of the euro. With the exchange rate having touched historic lows against the lek, the real value of remittances in local currency is relatively lower for beneficiaries in Albania. So, even though more euros are entering the economy, their purchasing power has been significantly affected by the depreciation.

Many Albanian families have had more remittances, but less real impact on their pockets, especially those who rely on these remittances for daily consumption. So, with the average exchange rate for the nine months of the current year estimated at an average of 98.24 Lek, we can say that remittances are worth a total of about 80.2 billion Lek.

Compared to the exchange rate in the period before the euro began to decline, this figure would be many times higher today. Referring to the figures of the "Bank of Albania", the average Euro-Lek exchange rate in 2022 was calculated at 118.9 Lek.

If we start from this assumed average, we can say that remittances would be worth 97 billion lek, or about 16.8 billion more. / Scan
