Over 9 billion lek in liabilities, institutions increased their debts on the eve

On the eve of the May 11 elections, Albanian institutions increased their arrears by over 2 billion lek. Data from the Ministry of Finance shows that debts to private companies for work or services performed at the end of March reached over 9.4 billion lek.

In the year-end report, arrears have increased by 2.1 billion lek or about 28 percent.

"Unfortunately, it's an election year, and election years always disrupt financial and economic balances. Institutions are inclined to spend money where they can attract voters," Suzana Guxholli, an economic expert, told A2 CNN.

Data from "Finance" shows that the majority of these obligations belong to local government institutions, municipalities with almost 4.2 billion lek, while 3.8 billion lek belong to the central government.

"Arrears are a serious problem for the management of the state budget, but for the government they are seen as a way to increase hidden debt, to make investments even though they do not have the money," Guxholli added.

Given the fact that arrears have become a problem that is not being resolved, "finance" has determined as a priority their repayment within the period of 2025-207.

"It has become a culture due to impunity. Although there is a legal basis, no one respects it, causing us all to lose out by not making these payments."

The majority of the arrears as of the end of March, almost half of the total, are for completed investments. The list is followed by services received but unpaid, court decisions and goods./ A2CNN
