Stable exchange rate, BoA: Euro-lek exchange rate averaged 98.9

The Euro-Lek exchange rate in the first months of the year has been more stable compared to the previous year.

Apparently, the campaign or the electoral process have not had any concrete effects in this regard. According to the Bank of Albania, the EUR/LEK exchange rate averaged 98.9, down from 98.4 in the last quarter of last year.

In annual terms, the appreciation of the Lek slowed down, falling to 4.7% in the first quarter, from 5.6% in the previous quarter. The stability of the exchange rate continued during April, when the rate resulted at 99.1 Lek, close to the average observed in March, while the annual appreciation of the Lek was further reduced, to 2.4%.

Meanwhile, now that we have officially entered the tourist season, the increase in euros in circulation may have effects on the further weakening of the European currency against the lek.

Currently, the exchange rate is one euro is being exchanged at around 98 lek.

Meanwhile, the performance of the Lek against the US Dollar has been mostly influenced by fluctuations in the latter's international market. The Lek depreciated against the Dollar in the first two months of the year, with one US Dollar quoted at an average of 95.1 Lek, up from 93.9 Lek in December last year.

Subsequently, the weakening of the US dollar in the international market, due to uncertainties over the effects of trade policies undertaken by the US, dictated the decline in March and April. In April, the average quotation for the dollar was 88.4 lekë, a level 6.6% lower than that of a year earlier.
