People, listen to Machado!

People, listen to Machado!
Maria Corina Machado /

A free voice from Oslo that should shake every regime that rules with fear, and every nation that risks forgetting that freedom requires courage...

There is nothing accidental about the fact that the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize went to a woman who was unable to physically attend the ceremony. In itself, María Corina Machado's absence was a political act stronger than any speech: a peace laureate forced into hiding by her country's government. This is not a metaphor, it is the reality of Latin America under an authoritarianism imbued with transnational crime.

And therein lies the true message of this year's Nobel Prize: this prize was not awarded for peace, but for the struggle for peace; not for a diplomatic compromise, but for the necessary clash with tyranny.

In Oslo, Machado did not speak as a persecuted dissident. She spoke as a political activist who understands that today peace is built on the ground where once only security was discussed.

Venezuela is no longer simply a failed state; it is a platform for the interests of Moscow, Tehran, and criminal networks aimed at destabilizing the Western Hemisphere. And Machado clearly articulated this danger, turning the press conference into a strategic briefing.

The Maduro regime is not a local issue, but a geopolitical knot that holds together traffickers, militias, and foreign interests. Machado denounced this structure in a tone that the West has rarely dared to use: “Venezuela is not ruled by a government, but by a criminal machine.” Precisely for this reason, her speech was received with enthusiasm in Oslo and with tension in Caracas.

This Nobel also touches our region. In the Balkans, where democracy has turned into democracy and where authoritarian regimes call themselves “stabilizers,” Machado’s message is a warning: there is no peace where fear reigns, nor security where institutions are captured. Without accountability, every international alliance remains formal; without justice, every integration is an illusion.

Machado did what many politicians in free countries dare not say: peace is not neutrality, but a position. It is not diplomatic silence, but a political act. And in a world where authoritarian powers are seeking to reconfigure the global order, this is a position the West can no longer avoid.

This Nobel does not just challenge Maduro. It challenges all those who use the rhetoric of peace to mask the rule of fear. And this is Machado's strong message: without a confrontation with tyranny, peace is only theory.

At the end of the day, the 2025 Nobel is not a Venezuelan story. It is a test for the democratic world: does it still have the will to confront modern autocracy? Machado gave her answer. Now it is our turn./ Pamphlet
