In a country where public order is often challenged by organized crime, immigration, traffic and urban insecurity, time will remember Albana Koçiu for an act of "historical" weight: she will be remembered for only one thing at the head of the Ministry of Interior; she banned skateboards by law. In every other sector of this ministry, she has failed successfully.
While citizens expected strong attacks on crime, police reforms, serious investigations into corruption in the administration, and a clear strategy for national security, the Ministry of Interior focused resolutely on battery-powered bicycles. A move that, in symbolic terms, showed that the state functions, especially when faced with two-wheeled vehicles with electric motors.
A balance sheet with noise, but without echo
Under her leadership, the structural challenges to public order remained where they were: organized crime continued to be the subject of international reports, youth emigration was not stopped by any security strategy, while citizens' perception of public order remained volatile.
But skateboards? They were banned.
Paradoxically, this decision became a symbol of an administrative approach that produces spectacle but not necessarily substantial reform. Because it is easier to stop a small urban vehicle than to dismantle large criminal networks.
Her appointment as Deputy Prime Minister is not simply a personal advancement. It is a political signal. In the architecture of power, promotions are not made solely on the basis of results, but on the basis of political trust and loyalty to the leadership.
In this context, Koçiu's rise speaks more about the internal balances of the majority than about performance on the ground. It is a message that political stability and discipline of the government agenda weigh more than critical reports or public perception.
The sarcasm of reality
In the end, perhaps history will be ironic: in a period of great security challenges, the most tangible decision for the ordinary citizen was the ban on skateboards. A measure that was sold as urban discipline, but which became a metaphor for the limits of reform.
