Faruk Fatih Ozer

Turkish cryptocurrency boss Faruk Fatih Ozer, (former CEO of the bankrupt crypto exchange Thodex), has been found dead in his prison cell in the western Turkish city of Tekirdag.

It is reported that the police are conducting an investigation and it is suspected that Ozer committed suicide.

Ozer, who led Thodex until its bankruptcy in 2021, was sentenced two years ago to 11,196 years in prison by a Turkish court for crimes involving fraud.

He dropped out of high school and founded Thodex in 2017, but was arrested in Albania after the company collapsed. An Albanian court ordered his extradition to Turkey in 2022.

While the prosecutor's initial indictments estimated total investor losses, when Thodex went bankrupt, at around $24 million, Turkish media reported figures as high as $2 billion.

Blockchain data and analysis company Chainalysis estimated the losses at $2.6 billion.

Fraud scheme

Faruk Ozer, a fugitive since April 2021, was accused in Turkey of having, in collaboration with other individuals, set up a fraud scheme by creating and selling virtual currencies through the company he himself founded, defrauding around 400,000 people who invested in his platform, now closed.

Authorities there froze the bank accounts of the THodex company, where 16 million liras were found. According to Turkish media, when he fled the country, Faruk Ozer had a server with him that held $108 million in cryptocurrencies. Several associates of the 28-year-old have been arrested in Turkey on charges of fraud.
