Donald Trump has given his "full and unconditional support" to Hungary's nationalist Prime Minister Viktor Orbán ahead of parliamentary elections scheduled for April 12.
Orbán, who has led Hungary for nearly 16 years, has been trailing in the polls for months, in a context marked by an economic slowdown, growing dissatisfaction with public services and scandals related to child protection policies.
" Viktor Orbán is a true friend, a fighter and a winner, and has my full and unconditional support for his re-election as Prime Minister of Hungary. He will never abandon the great people of Hungary ," Trump wrote on his Truth Social network.
Orban's party is trailing behind the Tisza formation, led by Péter Magyar, a former Fidesz member who has become one of Orbán's fiercest critics. In about a year and a half, Tisza has managed to unite the opposition vote.
Viktor Orbán is one of the few European leaders to maintain close relations with both the US president and Russian President Vladimir Putin. In contrast, he has tense relations with the European Union, which he accuses of fomenting the war in Ukraine.
