British military receives new instructions to shoot down unidentified drones

The UK armed forces will receive new instructions to shoot down suspicious drones over military bases, the Defence Secretary will announce the decision, amid a wave of air strikes across Europe.

According to the Ministry of Defence, John Healey will give a speech to business leaders at Mansion House on Monday to warn that Britain faces a growing threat from state-sponsored drone activity.

"The United Kingdom is not immune to these threats," Healey will say, according to previously released excerpts of his speech.

"We continue to defend ourselves every day from threats that extend from the seabed to cyberspace."

"We will always do what is necessary to keep the British people safe and, as we speak, we are developing new powers to shoot down unidentified drones over UK military bases," Healey said.

The Defense Secretary will highlight Russia's targeting of Ukraine's critical energy infrastructure ahead of winter, while Poland and Estonia have also seen intrusions into their airspace attributed to Moscow.

The measures will be introduced in the upcoming UK Armed Forces Bill.

This follows a series of moves by the UK to strengthen NATO's eastern flank, including ordering air defence patrols by RAF Typhoon jets over Poland and deploying counter-drone specialists to Denmark following suspicious aerial activity in its airspace.

Meanwhile, the EU is pursuing plans led by Ursula von der Leyen for a "drone wall" to counter intrusions, despite doubts expressed by some member states.
