Today, October 20, 2025, websites and platforms around the world experienced outages and malfunctions due to an outage at Amazon Web Services, the cloud computing service that provides the infrastructure for countless other online businesses.
The list of websites and platforms affected by "AWD Down," almost all of which went down simultaneously around 9 a.m., is long.
These services range from messaging service Signal to artificial intelligence service Perplexity, from gaming platform Roblox to Clash Royale, from image editing service Canva to Snapchat.
And consulting the (functional) DownDetector website, we see that many other services that don't work in the US are also out of order, services that we don't have here in Italy or aren't as widely used, such as the streaming platform Crunchyroll and the payment app Venmo.
Amazon-related services, from the popular e-commerce site to the Alexa voice assistant, are also affected by the problem. And, most importantly, Amazon Web Services itself.
The company itself confirmed - on its network health page - that it has experienced errors "with some AWS services in the USA-EST-1 region".
"This issue may also impact ticket creation through the AWS Support Center or Support API. We are actively working to mitigate the issue and understand the root cause. We will provide an update within 45 minutes, or sooner, if we have additional information to share," the statement said.
The problem appears to be related to DynamoDB, a proprietary AWS database.
The company has not yet revealed the reason for the outage. But jokes about the global impact of the outages have quickly started circulating online. "AWS went down and took half the internet with it," one user wrote on X. Another user reported being unable to turn on the lights at home because they were connected to Amazon Alexa, which has also been affected by the AWS outages.
