An unusual appearance by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio attracted attention during Donald Trump's trip to Beijing for the critical summit with Xi Jinping, after the head of US diplomacy appeared in a grey Nike tracksuit, which many immediately linked to the one worn by Nicolas Maduro when he was arrested by US special forces in Caracas in January.
The photo was taken inside Air Force One and was released by White House communications director Steven Cheung, who wrote on social media: "Secretary Rubio in Nike Tech 'Venezuela' on Air Force One!"
Rubio appeared expressionless, with his hands in his pockets, wearing gray tracksuits that were widely commented on for their similarity to those worn by the Venezuelan president in footage of his arrest.
According to the Telegraph, Rubio's presence on this trip is considered particularly significant, as he continues to be under Chinese sanctions due to his stances on human rights in China. To allow him entry, Beijing reportedly even changed the way his name is written in Chinese, modifying a character in his surname.
However, the Chinese side clarified that it would not block his entry. A Chinese embassy spokesman stated that the sanctions are related to Rubio's "statements and actions when he was a senator."
