Iran has officially denied reports of an oil spill near Kharg Island, the country's main oil export hub in the Persian Gulf, according to Iranian state media. The executive director of the Oil Terminals Company said inspections conducted in the area had found no evidence of an oil leak.
He added that even the Maritime Emergency Mutual Assistance Center, the regional body for marine pollution, has not reported any signs of a spill in the waters around the island.
The denial comes a day after reports that satellite images taken this week showed a large oil slick near the terminal. According to preliminary estimates, the suspected spill covers tens of square kilometers. Marine intelligence company Windward has analyzed the movement of the slick, reporting that it is advancing at a speed of about 2 km per hour towards the southeast.
If the trajectory remains the same, the closest coast that could be affected is the Al Mirfa area in the United Arab Emirates, within about 13 days. While Iran insists there is no leak, satellite monitoring and independent marine analysis continue to follow the development of the situation in one of the most important areas for the global oil market.
