The Afghan national who shot two National Guard soldiers in Washington had worked with the US armed forces in Afghanistan before they removed him from there to the United States, US media reported today.
According to Fox News, 29-year-old Ramanullah Lakanwal had worked with the US military and the CIA in Afghanistan and arrived in the United States in September 2021, a month after the chaotic withdrawal of US forces from that country. He was officially granted asylum this year.
The attack took place yesterday afternoon in the center of the American capital, where hundreds of army reservists have been deployed since August and are mainly patrolling on foot, on the orders of Donald Trump and against the will of local democratic authorities.

Chronology of the attack
The attack, which occurred hours ago, was the worst carried out against the National Guard since its units began deploying to Democratic-controlled cities earlier this year. At about 2:15 p.m. (local time; 9:15 p.m. ET), the suspect "came to a street corner, raised his gun and fired at the National Guard" patrolling the area, said Jeffrey Carroll, a police officer in the federal capital,
during a press conference, speaking of a perpetrator who acted “alone.” Other National Guard members tackled him, “subdued” him and “arrested him,” he added. The shooting “was targeted,” noted Muriel Bowser, the mayor of Washington, at the same press conference.
The two soldiers are in "critical condition," FBI Director Cass Patel said on camera, clearing up confusion that had prevailed for some time about their fate.
Patrick Morrisey, the governor of West Virginia, where the two National Guardsmen were serving, previously said via X that they had died from their injuries, before retracting the statement.
