Almost the entire leadership of the main opposition party "Social Democratic Union" (SDSM) in Skopje submitted its resignation, following a request from the party leader, Venko Filipce.
Specifically, the vice president, four vice presidents, and the secretary general resigned, as did all members of the SDSM Executive Committee.
The SDSM Central Committee is expected to meet in about two weeks to appoint replacements for those who resigned.
The mass resignations come after SDSM's heavy defeat in the recent municipal elections in Skopje, which has intensified the climate of introversion and political contestation within the party.
Venko Filipce stated that he has no intention of resigning from the leadership and that he will personally undertake efforts to rebuild and renew the party.
The "Social Democratic Union" (SDSM) is one of the two largest political parties in Skopje and the main exponent of the center-left social democratic tradition in the country.
The party was founded in 1991, as a successor to the "Union of Communists of Macedonia". After the dissolution of Yugoslavia, it evolved into a modern social democratic party with a European orientation.
SDSM has governed several times since the country's independence. A notable period was the government under Zoran Zaev (2017-2022), during which the Prespa Agreement was signed and the constitutional name change to "North Macedonia" was achieved, paving the way for NATO membership and EU accession processes.
Despite reforms, the party has faced internal friction, erosion of power, and growing voter dissatisfaction, which have led to electoral losses in recent years.
