Iran's Revolutionary Guard, the country's elite military force, warned on Thursday all ships in the Strait of Hormuz not to attempt to pass through it without authorization from Iranian authorities, threatening measures against those who do not respect the order.

The status of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the most important sea lanes for global trade, remains one of the most contentious issues in talks between Washington and Tehran. Iran has blocked passage through the area since the outbreak of war on February 28.

Tehran is considering imposing tariffs on passage through the strait, a practice that did not exist before the war. The United States opposes the plan, arguing that Hormuz is an international sea route, even though its waters border the coasts of Iran and Oman.

"The Strait of Hormuz can only be crossed through a corridor authorized by the Islamic Republic of Iran," the Revolutionary Guards said in a statement. According to it, any passage without Iran's permission is considered "unacceptable and dangerous," and Iranian authorities will take "appropriate measures." The statement also criticized the announcement by some authorities of a new maritime corridor.

The memorandum of understanding signed between Tehran and Washington to end the war provides for commercial ships to pass through the Strait of Hormuz duty-free for a period of 60 days only. The document adds that the Islamic Republic of Iran will take measures, within its capabilities, to guarantee the safe passage of commercial ships.

On Tuesday, Iran and Oman announced that they would review the amount of fees that could be imposed for services related to managing the Strait of Hormuz.
