Vanessa Ballan's killer was sentenced to life imprisonment. Bujar Fandaj, an Albanian of Kosovo origin, was sentenced by the Treviso Court today.
The decision came at the end of a session that lasted no more than two hours, as the Serious Crimes Court of the Treviso Tribunal sentenced Bujar Fandaj, a 40-year-old originally from Kosovo, to life imprisonment, who confessed to the murder of 26-year-old Vanessa Ballan, a supermarket cashier. The crime occurred on December 19, 2023, in Riese Pio X.
The trial and verdict were attended by the parents of the victim, who was killed while pregnant. Bujar Fandaj, represented by lawyers Chiara Mazzocato and Daria Bissoli, participated in the final verdict that locks him in prison for life.
"We did not expect this type of sentence, starting from the assumption that the public prosecutor himself had not requested it, so the court went beyond the public prosecutor's requests," explained Chiara Mazzocato and Daria Bissoli.
"Now we obviously cannot understand the reason for this decision, and the only possible thing is to wait, to be able to read the full decision and at that point we will understand and assess first of all whether it is appropriate to file an appeal and to assess which aspects were not taken into consideration, were not highlighted," the lawyers said.
Bujar Fandaj has not reacted at all, he has remained silent, while he must spend the rest of his life in prison.
Meanwhile, the Ballan family's lawyer, Simone Guglielmin, said that "justice has been served through a fair trial and, consequently, we have a fair sentence. The defendant will ultimately appeal, because I believe that ultimately it is a duty for the defense. I don't think I need to add any more questions; everything seems quite clear to me."
How did the crime happen?
Vanessa, a young mother expecting her second child, was found dead by her new partner in the home they shared. Her body bore multiple stab wounds, inflicted with indescribable violence (at least 8 stab wounds). She was on maternity leave and worked as a cashier at a local supermarket.
Suspicions immediately focused on Fandaj, with whom Vanessa had had an extramarital affair, which ended in the summer of 2023 at her request. Fandaj did not take the breakup lightly and launched a harassment campaign against her, culminating in the dissemination of intimate images, sent to the young woman's partner with the aim of revenge.
For these facts, Fandaj was charged with stalking and revenge pornography. This action temporarily put an end to his harassing behavior. But the break was temporary. According to the investigators' reconstruction, on December 19, 2023, Fandaj forced open a window and entered the woman's house. There, armed with a knife, he stabbed Vanessa eight times, leaving her lifeless on the floor. He then tried to flee Italy.
