SPAK follows the Croatian example only on paper...
SPAK was set up following the Croatian example. The arrest of Ivo Sanader was often mentioned by Euralius and OPDAT experts when the reform laws were drafted. Croatia also joined the EU thanks to the Special Prosecution Office, which sent hundreds of politicians to prison. However, even though corruption is still a problem there, the crackdowns do not stop.
A former Croatian minister, who was previously convicted of corruption, received a second sentence today for misuse of EU funds. According to prosecution evidence, she used Brussels funds for luxurious dinners.
Gabrijela Zalac, who was dismissed from her post as Minister of EU Funds in Croatia in mid-2019, was sentenced to seven months in prison for abuse of office and official authority, the European Public Prosecutor's Office (EPPO) announced in a statement.
According to the announcement by the EPPO, which is competent to investigate the misuse of EU funds, Zalac spent almost 10,000 euros in restaurants during at least nine occasions.
Local media reported that she used EU funds to cover the costs of celebrating her 40th birthday. She was sentenced to two years in prison for her role in the misuse of more than 1.3 million euros and agreed to pay 200,000 euros in partial compensation.
But it seems that this case is very similar to Albania. In our country, the funds provided by the EU for agriculture have been wasted. Frida Krifca has a voluminous file in SPAK and there is no movement. OLAF has discovered flagrant violations with IPARD funds. Even today, "Pamfleti" reported that the chapters on agriculture have been blocked, since the government has not conducted any administrative investigation into how the funds have been spent.
So, if we talk about the Croatian example, will SPAK also follow the example of the Croatian authorities to put behind bars those who abused EU funds? / Pamphlet
