Over 10,000 social media accounts are suspected of being used to publish coordinated negative comments and reviews against businesses operating in the tourism sector. The phenomenon was made public by Police Chief Skënder Hita, who held a special press conference after identifying cases related to calls to post negative reviews of businesses.

According to Hita, the State Police considers this a serious concern, as such actions can damage not only the activity of businesses, but also the image of Albania as a safe and welcoming tourist destination.

"Serious concern, about a suspected coordinated activity in cyberspace. This activity risks damaging not only businesses, but also the image of Albania as a safe and welcoming country. Our structures have identified suspected coordinated activity on online platforms, which consists of the massive publication of negative comments and reviews against businesses operating in the tourism sector. The administration of reports and data provide indications of the existence of a flow of accounts. Within a period, these accounts have published negative comments in large numbers with the aim of damaging the reputation of Albanian businesses.

Over 10 thousand accounts with suspicious activity patterns. There are also accounts with regular profiles that have been identified. Cases have been identified where the same account has published negative reviews for businesses in the cities of Tirana, Durrës, Elbasan, Shkodër, Korçë, Vlorë and Saranda. If proven to be intentional, it affects competition, consumer confidence and the perception of Albania as a safe destination. Any attempt to harm the country's economic interest will be treated with maximum priority. Anyone who has contacted similar cases should file a report with the police," said Hita.

The Chief of Police emphasized that the responsible structures are continuing investigations to identify the perpetrators and verify whether the activity was organized, while calling on businesses that claim to have been harmed by these practices to file a report with the State Police.
