Lawyer Alban Duraj has demanded the immediate release of 20 protesters detained during the tensions recorded in front of the Parliament. In a statement to the media, Duraj described the detentions as illegal and said that the protesters have not committed any criminal offense, but have only exercised their constitutional right to protest.
"We call for their immediate release. We are preparing a criminal complaint and everyone must be held accountable. The protesters have not committed any violations, other than exercising their right to protest," he declared.
The lawyer also alleged that during the intervention, the police used violence against the protesters with rubber batons and that the arrests were carried out on political grounds. According to him, the authorities have not provided legal explanations for the arrests.
Duraj called on the Director General of the State Police, the Minister of Interior and the prosecution body to intervene for the release of the detainees. He also requested a reaction from Prime Minister Edi Rama, calling on him to intervene so that, according to him, the protesters are released and returned to their families.
According to the lawyer, a criminal complaint is being prepared regarding the manner of police intervention and the procedures followed while escorting the protesters.
At the end of the statement, Duraj warned that the protest announced for July 4 is expected to have even greater participation, while claiming that the police had a plan to hinder the main activists of the rally.
"We call on them to be released immediately. We are preparing a criminal report, to hold everyone accountable. We call on the police, the police station, the Minister of Interior who has a duty to respect the law and only the law. We have learned in these 13 years how Rama has behaved with his ministers, to have at least a civic and then a legal conscience. Please respect the law, the report is ready, the prosecution will begin the investigation. All criteria have been violated when someone is arrested in flagrante delicto. What have the protesters done? Nothing, except respecting their right to protest and no violation.
They have not given us any kind of answer. They are waiting for orders that are political. No criminal offense has been committed by the protesters. It was the police who hit the protesters. The employees were with rubber batons, exercising violence, in very large numbers. In addition to the release that we are requesting from the police director, we are also requesting from the prosecutor, who is the prosecutor who has this case, to order the immediate release. Our call goes in two directions, to the police director and the minister. We are requesting that Rama react regarding these illegal arrests. We are requesting Rama so that the protesters can go to their families and continue their lives normally.
"This request is also to continue the protest, the one on the 4th will be one of the largest. The police had a plan to prevent the main activists of this protest ," said the protesters' lawyer, Alban Duraj.
