Conflict erupts within the group that controls "Manastiri Resort", the company behind the controversial project in the protected area of Ksamil. Accusations of theft of funds, embezzlement of property and physical violence between partners
Mirela Kumbaro's "tiny spot" in the Bay of Manastir seems to have become a 'war arena' for the partners of the companies that control the luxury resort built in one of the most controversial tourist areas of the south.
A strong clash between shareholders of "Finman shpk", the company that controls a wide network of businesses, including "AlbStar" and "Manastiri Resort", has degenerated this Thursday into physical violence, threats and serious accusations of disappearance of funds and embezzlement of property within the resort.
It is reported that, immediately after the meeting of the Society's Assembly, the situation got out of control. At the center of the clash were Idajet Ismailaj and his son Florid Ismailaj on one side, while on the other side, partner Sokol Agalliu.
Sources close to the company claim that the debate erupted after Agalliu made direct accusations against the Ismailaj family, claiming that around 500 million new lekë have disappeared from the company's coffers, while according to him, around 750 square meters in the "Manastiri Resort" area have also been appropriated.
The verbal altercation then escalated into a physical conflict. According to claims made by Agalliu's side, private security personnel were also involved in the incident, while Agalliu himself ended up in the emergency room of a private hospital in Tirana.
But this is not the first time that conflict between partners has erupted publicly.
Just a few days ago, another incident was recorded between Sokol Agalliu and the company's staff at the premises of "Finman shpk". The verbal conflict had escalated into a physical confrontation with a company lawyer, an event for which the police also intervened. Agalliu was initially arrested, but was later released by the Tirana Court with a lighter security measure.
Despite this, the tension did not subside. Sources close to the company say that Agalliu returned to the company's offices earlier this week to attend a board meeting, but was not allowed in due to the open conflict between the parties.
At the heart of this dispute lies the highly debated "Manastiri Resort" project, a luxury resort built near the Bay of Manastiri in Ksamil, an area that has been part of the protected territory for years.
In 2021, the Minister of Environment and Tourism, Mirela Kumbaro, signed the decision to remove the area from the protected territory, paving the way for the construction of the resort by Idajet Ismailaj's company "AlbStar". The project caused strong public reactions and accusations of favoritism, while Kumbaro herself minimized the debate in the Assembly, describing the investment as "a small point".
Subsequently, the National Territorial Council approved the permit for the tourist project, while in 2024 further changes were granted to the conditions of the construction permit for the complex with several floors above and below ground.
To realize the investment, the company “Manastiri Resort” was created, founded by “Finman” and the company “Andi shpk”. Just two weeks after the company was established, the project received the status of “Strategic Investor”.
Later, the partner company withdrew from the investment, transferring the shares to "Finman", while the value of the transaction was not made public.
The group of companies controlled by Sadik and Idajet Ismailaj has often been at the center of public debate due to their winning of tenders, construction permits, concessions, and strategic projects.
This network includes companies operating in construction, energy, tourism, casinos, infrastructure and oil. The group's name has also been mentioned in reports related to tenders considered problematic by the Supreme State Audit Office.
In the past, Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska, sanctioned by the United States and subsequently linked to the McGonigal affair, a scandal that rocked Albanian politics and relations with Washington, has also been mentioned in several energy projects linked to the Ismailaj group.
While investigations into the latest clash between partners are expected to shed light on the details of the conflict, the quarrel within the company that controls "Manastiri Resort" is exposing not only the fight for millions of euros, but also the behind-the-scenes of one of the most debated tourism investments of recent years in the south of the country. / Pamphlet
