The Croatian media outlet " Večernji list " wrote today about the recognition of Kosovo's independence by Syria. According to this media outlet, this decision by official Damascus is a "cold shower" for the Serbian president, due to the good economic and political relations between Syria and Serbia.
"For Aleksandar Vučić, who in recent years has insisted on maintaining "brotherly" relations with Damascus, this step comes as a cold shower. The Syrian government's decision to recognize Kosovo's independence represents one of the most serious foreign policy blows for Aleksandar Vučić in recent years."
"Especially surprising is that Syria, under the leadership of President Bashar al-Assad, had for years refused to recognize Kosovo mainly due to its close relations with Moscow and the influence of Russian President Vladimir Putin," writes Vecernji List.
According to Croatian media, Serbia, which has not imposed sanctions on Syria despite Western demands, has maintained good political and economic relations with Damascus.
"Along with Russia and Iran, Syria was among the rare countries that strongly supported Serbia's territorial integrity. Precisely for this reason, today's recognition of Kosovo by Damascus is seen in Belgrade as a betrayal and a serious blow to Serbian foreign policy," she writes.
Syria's recognition of Kosovo was formalized during a meeting in Riyadh, attended by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, and Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani-Sadriu.
The Syrian Foreign Ministry has confirmed that the tripartite meeting discussed deepening mutual understanding and opening new channels of cooperation.
"Syria looks forward to establishing diplomatic relations with Kosovo and developing political, economic and cultural cooperation to achieve common interests," the Syrian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
In Damascus, they emphasize that this is part of a broader policy of openness to the world and strengthening friendly relations with all peoples, Croatian media writes.
