The wife of the late footballer Diogo Jota has revealed the last message she sent him moments before his tragic accident, according to a new biography dedicated to the Portuguese star.
Rute Cardoso had planned to send Jota a video of their wedding, unaware that he had just been involved in a fatal accident in a rented Lamborghini Huracan on a motorway in Spain. The 28-year-old Liverpool footballer lost his life in July last year.
According to Spanish police, the main cause of the accident was speed. At the time of the incident, Jota was travelling with his brother, Andre Silva, to Santander to catch a ferry to the UK, having been advised to avoid flying due to a lung operation.
The official biography, written by former footballer Jose Manuel Delgado, is titled “Nunca Mais e Muito Tempo” (“Never More of a Long Time”) and is due to be published on April 9 in Portugal. The publishers describe the book as an emotional and respectful work that pays homage to Jota’s life and legacy, both as a footballer and as a person.
In an interview with Portuguese television, presenter Isabel Figueira said:
"What shocked me the most was the way Rute recounts the last messages she sent to Jota, but which he never received. She says she had just received the wedding video and writes: 'My love, when you stop, call me, because I have something to tell you.' It was this special video of their wedding," she writes.
