A Spanish judge has widened the investigation into the Spanish federation's deal to take the Spanish Super Cup to Saudi Arabia and has included Gerard Pique among those under investigation.
In court documents made available to the press, judge Delia Rodrigo officially included the former Spain and Barcelona defender in a group of people who are now under official investigation.
The investigation is looking into suspicions of corruption and money laundering in the organization of the Spanish Super Cup by Saudi Arabia, an operation orchestrated by the former president of the Spanish Federation, Luis Rubiales.
The Madrid court said on Thursday that the contracts signed between the federation and Saudi Arabia in 2019 and 2020 result in a 10-year deal to host the mini-soccer tournament in the Middle Eastern country for 40 million euros ($43 million in year).
But documents seized during police raids in March showed a further €4m a year was to be paid in commissions to Pike's Kosmos sports entertainment company while the former footballer was still playing for Barcelona in the Super Cup. Pike has since retired from football.
Kosmos was involved in the renewal of the Davis Cup in tennis and also in the launch of the King's League soccer tournament in Spain, which was expanded to Latin America.
In April, the same judge ordered the freezing of a Kosmos bank account. The case is still under investigation. The court may decide to dismiss the case or go to trial. Police arrested Rubiales and other federation employees in early April.
The investigation later expanded to include Rubiales' successor, Pedro Roça, who took over as interim president of the Federation after Rubiales resigned in September, weeks after the scandal over him kissing a player without her consent during an awards ceremony of the Women's World Cup.
