Fans' attention is focused on football stars, but the 2026 World Cup referees will also receive record financial rewards for their commitment to the biggest football tournament.
According to published data, each main referee selected for the 2026 World Cup will receive a basic salary of around 86,000 euros just for participating in the group stage. The amount could increase significantly for those referees who will be appointed to direct elimination matches.
Compared to the 2022 World Cup, when referees received around 60 thousand euros, the rewards in the current edition represent a significant increase, reflecting the expansion and growing importance of the competition.
In addition to their basic pay, referees will also receive bonuses for each match they referee. This will also benefit assistant referees and VAR officials, who have an increasingly important role in decision-making during matches.
For the 2026 World Cup, FIFA has selected 52 referees, 88 assistant referees and 30 VAR officials to oversee 104 matches during the tournament. This is a significant increase compared to the 2022 edition, when 64 matches were played.
