A similar situation was experienced at the 1994 World Cup in the USA, when high temperatures significantly hampered the performance of teams, especially those playing in the eastern regions of the country. However, after more than three decades, sports science and technology have advanced significantly, providing footballers with more effective tools to cope with extreme conditions.
In addition to specialized nutrition, hydration, and recovery programs, sports equipment is also gaining importance. Modern jerseys are made with lighter and more breathable materials, designed to reduce the sensation of heat and sweating during physical activity.
One of the national teams that is investing in advanced technology is Spain. The Iberian team has at its disposal the “Climacool” system, a special package consisting of a vest with cooling gel, an insulating jacket and special protection for the shoes.
The vest contains a gel that is pre-frozen and then gradually thaws, helping to lower body temperature. It can be used during hydration breaks or in the interval between two halves of the match. Meanwhile, the insulating jacket maintains the cooling effect created by the vest.
Part of the system are also shoe protectors, which aim to prevent overheating and swelling of the feet. According to the manufacturers, the temperature of the feet can be reduced by about two degrees Celsius within seven minutes, significantly improving the comfort and performance of the players.
Meanwhile, national teams are experimenting with other preparation methods. Belgium has decided to include hot showers and sauna sessions after training, with the aim of accustoming the players' bodies to the temperatures they are expected to encounter during the tournament.
Belgium will play their first match on June 15 against Egypt at Seattle's Lumen Field. The match will be played at noon and the arena is one of the tournament's open-air stadiums, with no roof or retractable awning, increasing exposure to sunlight.
Belgian midfielder Axel Witsel has stressed the importance of adapting to the climate. According to him, not all players are used to such high temperatures, but the team is following specific programs to minimize the impact of the heat.
Norway is also paying special attention to hydration management. Medical staff are constantly monitoring the players' hydration status through regular tests, in order to prevent problems that can be caused by high temperatures.
Sports experts estimate that adapting to heat, managing fatigue, and maintaining optimal hydration levels will be crucial factors for teams' success at the 2026 World Cup. In a tournament where the climate is expected to play a significant role, off-field preparation could prove to be just as important as on-field performance.
