In a spectacular match in the round of 16 of the 2025 Club World Cup, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) triumphed with a convincing 4-0 victory against Lionel Messi's Inter Miami, securing qualification for the quarter-finals. The match, held at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, USA, highlighted the clear superiority of the European champions over the team from Major League Soccer (MLS).
PSG opened the scoring in the 6th minute, when Portuguese midfielder João Neves headed in a well-taken free kick from Vitinha. Neves doubled the lead in the 39th minute, capping a fine team effort involving Bradley Barcola and Fabián Ruiz. Just a few minutes later, in the 44th minute, Inter Miami defender Tomás Avilés scored an unfortunate own goal after a cross from Désiré Doué. The pinnacle of PSG's dominance came in the 45th+3rd minute, when Achraf Hakimi scored the fourth goal, after an initial shot that hit the crossbar and was turned into the Moroccan's own net.
PSG completely dominated the first half, using speed, precision and high pressure to trouble Inter Miami's defence. Lionel Messi, despite his best efforts, was neutralized by PSG's tight defence and goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, who made several crucial saves, including a shot from Messi in the second half. Inter Miami struggled to react after the break, with Messi and Luis Suárez creating several chances but failing to score. Suárez missed a golden opportunity after a brilliant pass from Messi, while PSG slowed down, managing to take the lead.
The defeat marked the end of Inter Miami's Club World Cup campaign, despite them being the only MLS team to reach the knockout stages. For Messi, the match represented an emotional comeback against his former club, but he was unable to make a difference. On the other hand, PSG demonstrated their strength as one of the main contenders for the title, after a season in which they won the Champions League with a 5-0 triumph over Inter Milan.
PSG will face the winner of Flamengo vs. Bayern Munich in the quarterfinals on July 5, 2025, in Atlanta. Meanwhile, Inter Miami returns to MLS, where they will play Montreal on July 6, looking to bounce back from their disappointing elimination.
