"Kosovo is Serbia," Latvian fans boo Serbs after anti-Albanian chants

The organizers of the World Cup qualifying match between Latvia and Serbia, which took place this Saturday in Riga, did not allow any Serbian symbols to be brought into the stadium by the visiting fans.

They asked fans to remove any possible Serbian symbols, T-shirts, scarves, hats, or flags they had taken to display in the stands. The organizers' explanation for this decision was that there would be no organized and separate space for visiting fans at the match in the Latvian capital.

Some of the fans, according to media in Belgrade, even took off their shirts in order to be allowed to enter to watch the match.

But even though security guards banned any Serbian symbols, the friendly fans thought of causing tension in the stands. After Dušan Vlahović's goal in the 12th minute of the match, the Serbian fans erupted in cheers and chanted: "Kosovo is Serbia."

What surprised them was the response of the Latvian fans, who erupted in boos and cheers against the Serbs' action.

Serbia is in Group K of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers with England, Albania, Latvia and Andorra.

England holds first place in the table with nine points, while Albania has five points.
