Algeria-Austria was the match that closed the group stage of the 2026 World Cup and at the same time the challenge that generated the most controversy. The meeting ended with a score of 3-3, while accusations and doubts have circulated on social networks about the way the final minutes unfolded.
When everything was heading towards a 2-2 draw, a result that would serve both teams, Riyad Mahrez scored in the 93rd minute, giving Algeria a 3-2 advantage.
This goal temporarily changed the scenario of the qualification. Austria, with this result, remained out of the tournament, while Algeria did not fully benefit from the victory either, as a third place would have allowed them to avoid a confrontation with Spain in the knockout stage.
However, just moments after the restart, Austria managed to equalize at 3-3, restoring balance and securing qualification as second in the group.
The team that was most penalized by this development was Iran. For a few minutes, the Iranians believed they had qualified as one of the best third-place teams, but Austria's equalizer in extra time left them out of the World Cup.
With the point, Austria finished the group in second place and will face Spain in the round of 16. Meanwhile, Algeria finished the group in third place and will challenge Switzerland in the next round.
