Mexico's convincing 3-0 victory over the Czech Republic in the World Cup was accompanied by a serious incident in the resort town of Cabo San Lucas, where fans' celebrations ended in chaos.
The incident occurred on Wednesday evening, when a vehicle drove into thousands of fans who had blocked Lázaro Cárdenas Boulevard to celebrate the national team's success.
According to initial reports, the vehicle was surrounded by a crowd and its driver, under pressure, suddenly accelerated, hitting dozens of pedestrians. After the vehicle stopped, several people forcibly removed the driver from the car and raped him, until police officers intervened at the scene, rescued him and put him in handcuffs.
The preliminary toll from the incident is 17 injured, including the driver himself. One of the injured fans is in serious condition and is being treated in the intensive care unit.
This is the second similar incident during this World Cup. Last week, an event with similar circumstances was also recorded in the city of Chihuahua.
Local authorities have launched investigations to fully clarify the circumstances of the incident, while calling on citizens to avoid dangerous situations and chaos during massive celebrations in the streets.
