
New penalties have been imposed on football players and referees in Turkey, as everything is now coming to light once and for all on the issue of illegal betting.
In the fall, the major scandal that erupted in Turkey regarding the involvement of players and referees in illegal betting shook the country's football and made waves on the European stage.
In this context, the Disciplinary Committee of the country's Federation imposed new penalties on 224 footballers and 24 referees. About a month ago, over 1,000 players were sent to court, as well as many referees and team officials. As for the players, the penalties imposed at that time included some well-known names, such as Galatasaray's Eren Elmal, who was even expelled from the Turkish national team.
According to information regarding the new punishments, out of 224 footballers, 197 are amateurs, while five out of 24 referees “whistled” in the country’s first division. Their punishments range from 45 days to a one-year suspension from football.
The illegal betting scandal hit football in Turkey like a bombshell and looks set to remain in the headlines for a long time as investigations continue.
Disciplinary Committee Announcement:
“ At the meeting of the Professional Football Disciplinary Council dated 16.12.2025 number 37, the following matter was referred to our Council in accordance with Article 57 of the Football Disciplinary Regulations (FDT)… 197 amateur footballers, who are either included in the “Group A” lists or can compete in professional matches by being included in the list of players, in accordance with the regulations of the relevant competitions. In addition to the 1,024 footballers referred to the PFDK on 10.11.2025, investigations were also completed for 27 footballers .
