The "play-off" phase to qualify for the 2026 World Cup begins many months before March, when matches are played that determine the names of the final teams that will secure a ticket for the tournament taking place in the USA, Canada and Mexico.
The reason is the accusations of Nigeria, which has accused the representative of the Democratic Republic of Congo, which it defeated in the continental play-off and will now have the right to participate in the intercontinental play-off in March, of document manipulation.
"Arise News" reports that the official accusation that Nigeria has filed with FIFA is for the activation with irregular documentation of about 9 players from the Democratic Republic of Congo in the match between the two teams. According to it, these are footballers who have changed federations, with well-known names included such as Tuanzebe (England), Masuaku (France), Wan-Bissaka (England) or Sadiki (Belgium).
FIFA has theoretically accepted the change of federation, but Nigeria claims that Congo submitted falsified documentation. According to it, Congolese rules stipulate that you cannot hold dual citizenship if you want to become a citizen of this country and none of these players have renounced their previous citizenship, so they could not have been in compliance with the laws of the respective country when they applied for the change, as FIFA requires.
It now remains to be seen how the international organization will express itself on this issue that has sparked the World Cup "play-offs" many months before the matches take place.
