Tourists in Paris were surprised by dozens of foreign police officers patrolling the French capital in aid of local police ahead of the Olympics.

As if they were celebrities, tourists sought photos with police officers from countries such as Brazil, Spain and Korea while at the iconic Sacre Coeur basilica.

" I think it is good that there is a large police presence, especially the international presence. It really helps international crowds feel at home, feel more secure. It's good to enjoy the games and feel safe, which is the most important thing, especially in these times that are very charged politically and with wars ," says an American tourist.

More than 200 Spanish police officers will patrol the French capital, while 20 are from Brazil.

A total of around 1,800 police officers from more than 40 countries are expected to assist the French police. The extra officers will assist during the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games on the River Seine on Friday 26 July.

About 45,000 policemen will guarantee the security of the opening ceremony, including special forces. Snipers will be placed on top of buildings as well as an anti-drone system.

" This is good for France because it gives us more security and I think it is good to unite all countries. This shows that we all stand together and help each other so that the Olympic Games run smoothly ," says a resident of Paris.

" In terms of public safety, this will go down in history, because never before have thousands of policemen been involved in this type of cooperation. Foreign police dressed in their respective uniforms will patrol the streets of the French capital ," says the Brazilian police coordinator.
