Driver caught 'sniffing' in Italy, his excuse surprises police: I overdid it with vinegar

A 57-year-old man in Italy has surprised Traffic Police officers with the excuse he gave after being caught driving while intoxicated.

Stopped on Via Emilia, near Castel San Pietro, the driver of a van was initially stopped for not wearing a seatbelt. But the situation took a different turn when officers noticed a strong odor of alcohol coming from the vehicle.

According to Bologna Police, it was initially thought that the smell could have come from a broken bottle during transport, after the 57-year-old stated that his cargo also contained alcoholic beverages.

However, after checks it turned out that the source of the smell was not the cargo, but the driver himself. The alcohol test came back positive and the measurement showed 1.73 grams of alcohol per liter of blood, a level more than three times the permitted limit of 0.5 g/l.

In an attempt to explain the result, the 57-year-old told the police:

"I probably overdid it with the vinegar on the salad!"

The unusual justification did not convince the officers at all. As a result, a procedure was initiated against him for drunk driving, and his driving license was immediately suspended.
