The "Strawberry Moon" lights up the sky on June 30: why it's called that and what makes it special

Tomorrow evening, June 30, the sky will be lit by the so-called "Strawberry Moon," a traditional name that is associated with the fruit's harvest season and not with the color of the Moon.

This name comes from the indigenous peoples of North America, particularly the Algonquin tribes, who named full moons according to seasonal cycles to help with calendar orientation. The “Strawberry Moon” marked the short strawberry harvest period.

Contrary to its name, the Moon does not appear pink or red. It will have a yellowish tint near the horizon and then turn its usual white color as it rises higher in the sky.

The warm colors near the horizon are created by the Earth's atmosphere, which scatters blue light and makes red and orange hues more visible. The phenomenon is made even more special by its low position on the horizon near the summer solstice, creating the illusion that the Moon appears larger than usual.
