Richard Gere and director Oren Moverman will produce "Wisdom of Happiness," a new documentary about the Dalai Lama. Directed by Barbara Miller and Philip Delakis, "Wisdom of Happiness" features the Dalai Lama, 89, speaking directly to camera about the universal quest for peace and happiness, as well as the possibilities for a peaceful and happy 21st century .
"It's a simple film that can have a big impact in the future," says Gere, a former student and friend of the Dalai Lama.
Moverman adds: As a filmmaker I am deeply grateful for the invitation to be a part of this truly unique film that so beautifully portrays kindness. Offering audiences a viewing experience like no other, the documentary 'Wisdom of Happiness' speaks to humanity through a wise and surprisingly entertaining messenger.
In addition to an interview with the Dalai Lama, "Wisdom of Happiness" will feature newly restored and never-before-seen archival footage from the Tibetan government archives to tell the story of the 14th Dalai Lama, born Tenzin Gyatso, who officially became the spiritual leader of Tibet at the age of 4 in 1940.
In the film, the Dalai Lama talks about balancing thousands of years of Tibetan Buddhist traditions with the modern values of our globalized society. The Tibetan religious and political leader was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989 for his non-violent campaign to end Chinese rule in Tibet.
