Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and his fiancée Lauren Sanchez, a former television journalist, are set to marry. The wedding details are being kept under wraps and the date has not yet been announced, but the festivities are planned for June 24-26.
However, there is much anger among locals, as they fear the world heritage site will suffer from the effects of overtourism. Activists have intensified their “No Place for Bezos” campaign after Luigi Brugnaro, the millionaire mayor of Venice, confirmed in March that the couple would marry in the city.
Locals raised a banner reading "No Bezos" on the bell tower of the Basilica of San Giorgio on the Venetian island of San Giorgio, where the couple is said to be exchanging vows.
According to a report by the NYT, Federica Toninello, a protest organizer, said one of the locations could be The Misericordia, a former charity turned event hall. But she said Bezos will never go to the venue. “Bezos will never go to Misericordia,” she said, adding, “We will fill the streets with our bodies, we will block the canals with our lifeboats and our boats.”
Na Haby Stella Faye, another protester, said: “We have a chance to ruin a ten million dollar wedding – let’s do it.”
Despite very little information about the wedding, the press has been filled with rumors about the guests, hotel rooms, the bride's dress, and more.
Brugnaro has called the anti-Bezos activists "shameful" and informed locals that the wedding will not cause any disturbance.
"Only 200 people will be invited and therefore it will be easy for Venice to organize such an event, without any concern for the city, its residents and visitors," the Venice Municipality said.
