Eating at irregular times and skipping meals can increase the risk of depression by 55 percent, according to a study published in the Journal of Affective Disorders, which analyzed data from more than 21,000 adults in South Korea over eight years.
Researchers found that people who didn't eat their main meals regularly were significantly more likely to experience depressive symptoms. Meanwhile, skipping breakfast was found to further increase this risk.
According to experts, irregular eating schedules can disrupt the body's biological rhythm, affecting hormones that regulate mood and emotional well-being. Irregular eating is also often linked to a lack of vitamins, fiber, and antioxidants, all of which are important for mental health.
The link between disordered eating and depression was strongest among men, smokers, and people who ate late at night.
Although further studies are needed to determine whether this link is causal, the researchers emphasize that eating regular meals, a varied diet, and not skipping breakfast may be simple measures that help reduce the risk of depression.
