On the 13th day of citizen protests, Edi Rama has chosen to respond with a demonstration of political force. Under the guise of celebrating the 35th anniversary of the Socialist Party, the prime minister has mobilized MPs, local leaders and party structures to fill Italia Square, in an activity that is being read as a response to the revolt in the streets. Amid criticism of historical figures of the SP and complaints about the administration's forced participation, the socialists' celebration is taking the form of an anti-rally in front of the protesters.
The Socialist Party will soon celebrate the 35th anniversary of its founding in a major event at Italy Square.
Under normal circumstances, it would be a day of celebration for the Socialists, but this time the anniversary is taking place at one of the most difficult political moments for the majority.
Just a few meters away from the Socialists' holiday, citizens will gather again in protest for the 13th consecutive day. A revolt that has dominated the country's political life over the past two weeks and that has brought thousands of citizens to the streets against the government. Precisely for this reason, the SP's activity is being seen by many not simply as a celebration for the party's birthday, but as a kind of anti-rally and demonstration of force in the face of the protesters.
Sources from the Socialists indicate that for days, MPs, political leaders and branch leaders have been engaged in ensuring the greatest possible participation in the activity. Buses have been organized from the regions to Tirana, while there have been complaints in the administration that participation was required as an obligation and not as a choice.
The Socialists will stand during the event, while the only one expected to give a speech is the Prime Minister and SP leader, Edi Rama. During the event, the broadcast of some film materials is also expected, while no other speeches are planned.
Due to increased security measures, the media are not allowed to enter the fenced perimeter where the activity is taking place.
Essentially, the message Rama wants to convey seems clear: while the protesters claim to represent civic anger, he wants to show that the Socialist Party continues to remain the largest political force in the country and that its base remains mobilized.
But this year's celebration lacks the enthusiasm of other anniversaries. The 35th anniversary finds the Socialist Party surrounded by criticism coming not only from the opposition or protesters, but also from within its own political family.
Former MP Arta Dade has refused to participate in the event and has declared that the place of true socialists is with the young people protesting in the square and not in what she has described as an "anti-meeting" organized from above. Ditmir Bushati has also demanded deep reflection from the Socialist Party, describing the protest as a revolt of dignity and a reflection of the problems accumulated over the years.
Meanwhile, Erion Braçe, in his message for the 35th anniversary, has also spoken about the need for reflection, listening to socialists, and avoiding personalization of power. Elisa Spiropali has also publicly articulated the need for a new political agreement and strengthening institutions in the face of power.
Thus, on the day the Socialist Party blows out its 35 candles, Edi Rama is not in the atmosphere of a political triumph. On the contrary, he is celebrating in the midst of a storm coming from two directions. On one side are the protesters who have been challenging the government in the streets for 13 days. On the other are the critical voices within the left that are calling for reflection and change.
And for this reason, today's activity in Italy Square looks less like a birthday party and more like an attempt to show strength at a time when the government is facing the greatest political challenge in recent years. / Pamphlet
