Democratic Party MP Ina Zhupa has accused the government of damaging protected areas and lacking accountability for projects that, according to her, endanger the country's environment and natural heritage.
Zhupa focused on her request for an urgent interpellation with the Minister of Environment, raising concern that this request has not been included in the agenda.
"I have requested an urgent interpellation with the Minister of Environment regarding protected areas. To come and give an account to the Albanians. Why has the urgent interpellation not been included in the agenda?", declared the MP in the Assembly.
She also accused the government of allowing uncontrolled interventions in some of the country's most important areas, citing the Bay of Manastir, Butrint, and Narta.
"You were taught to concrete whatever you wanted. You built the Bay of Manastir and Butrint with a concession, you didn't ask. Today you want to enter Narta headfirst and you don't ask ," said Zhupa.
The DP MP praised the citizens' protests against projects in protected areas, opposing the labels that have been given to the protesters.
"They are Albanian protesters, not Greeks, or Russians, or agents. They are Albanians who care about their country," she said.
In her speech, Zhupa emphasized that tourism development cannot be built on the concreting of natural areas and called for greater protection for the environment.
"Sustainable tourism is with a sustainable environment. There is no sustainable tourism with concrete. You want to tell Albanians stories with concrete and villas," declared the MP.
She concluded her speech with a criticism of the government for the way projects in protected areas are being handled.
"Today you should be afraid of those Albanians who protest beyond any party. You can't tell us that you are doing an environmental study with a bulldozer," Zhupa concluded.
