The meeting of left-wing councilors of the Municipality of Tirana, at the SP headquarters, ended around 6:30 PM, with the socialists deciding to push forward the request for the dismissal of Mayor Erion Veliaj, who has been in detention for 7 months.
Sources from the meeting told A2 CNN that the municipal councilors were asked to dismiss Mayor Erion Veliaj on the grounds that he has been absent from duty for 3 months. The sources further explain that the request for Veliaj's dismissal contains more or less parts of Prime Minister Edi Rama's speech at the SP Assembly, where he opened the way for partial elections for the capital, entrusting this race to former Minister of Education Ogerta Manastirliu.
A2 CNN learns that councilor Aldo Mërkoçi resisted signing the request, although he eventually signed it along with all his colleagues. He requested that the statement be noted that Veliaj has served the city and other words about his good work, and his request was taken into account.
It has also been decided that next Tuesday, at 4:00 PM, a meeting of the Tirana Municipal Council will be held to make the decision.
